Calif. Teen Sailor Located, Alive and Well, Drifting in Indian Ocean

So you think I'm going is piss and bitch about a 16 year old on an adventure in the middle of the ocean by herself, right? Bullshit. I think she's a gutsy, smart girl with a whole lot of potential and who will do some amazing things in the future.

Ok, she's out in the middle of the Indian Ocean after battling a storm with 30 foot waves rounding the southern tip of Africa. She broke her mast. That could happen to anyone in those waters. The two things she did were sensable and smart. First she admited she was in some trouble before it became life threatening and sent out a distress call. Smart girl. Wait until you are sinking to do that and the search crews will never find you. Second she did not cut away the mast and sails. Why is that smart? They are acting like a sea anchor, reducing her drift and holding her relative position.

Right now, the weather is good and she is not in any real trouble. Should a storm come up before rescue arrives she can still cut away the mast and sail. Then jerry-rig a stay sail and hold her bow into the storm.

Smart girl there.
